Sutra 1.4 — The Sky Behind the Storm
1.4
vṛtti sārūpyam itaratra
At other times, we identify with the movements of the mind.
In the previous sutra, we explored what happens when the movements of the mind begin to settle.
For a moment, the quiet observer becomes easier to notice.
This sutra describes the opposite experience.
When We Become the Movement
Most of the time, rather than observing our thoughts, we become absorbed by them.
A worry appears, and the body tightens.
A memory appears, and we are pulled back into the past.
A plan appears, and our attention rushes ahead into the future.
The thought arrives — and before we realize it, we’re already following it.
Patañjali describes this as sārūpyam — taking on the same shape as the movements of the mind.
In other words, whatever thought is passing through the mind begins to feel like who we are.
The Sky and the Storm
Let’s return to the image of the sky.
Thoughts and emotions move through the mind like clouds.
Sometimes the clouds are light and passing.
Sometimes they gather into storms.
We can watch a storm moving across the sky without becoming the storm itself.
But when the mind becomes caught in its own movements, it can feel as though we have stepped inside the storm.
The emotions grow stronger.
The thoughts circle.
Clarity becomes harder to find.
Stepping Back
When we step back and observe the storm, something different becomes possible.
We can see what is actually happening.
We can better understand the situation.
And from that place of awareness, we can choose how to respond.
Practice begins with learning to recognize the difference.
Sometimes we become the storm.
Sometimes we remember we are the sky.
Looking Ahead
To understand this more clearly, Patañjali next begins to describe the different kinds of movements that appear in the mind.
A Question to Sit With
Thoughts move through the mind all day long.
Some are helpful.
Some are fleeting.
Some pull us completely into their story.
Yoga begins when we notice that we don’t have to become every thought that passes through.
Sometimes we are the storm.
When a strong thought or emotion appears, can you notice the moment when you begin to follow it?
