Sutra 1.16 — A Deeper Letting Go

1.16
tat paraṁ puruṣa khyāter guṇa vaitṛṣṇyam

A deeper letting go arises when we are no longer pulled by the constant changing qualities of life.

This sutra describes a deeper layer of letting go.

Not just releasing obvious attachments…

but becoming less pulled around by everything that changes.

Because life is always changing.

  • Moods shift.

  • Circumstances shift.

  • Success comes and goes.

  • Plans work out… or don’t.

The mind naturally chases what feels good and resists what feels uncomfortable.

It’s constantly moving:

  • toward

  • away

  • toward

  • away

This sutra points to a quieter place.

A steadiness that is less dependent on how things are going in any given moment.

Not because we stop caring.

But because we are not constantly pulled in every direction.

There is a growing sense of:

“I can experience this… without being completely defined by it.”

And in that…

there is a different kind of freedom.

A Question to Sit With

What changes around you seem to pull your mind the most?

And what might it feel like to stay steady… even as those things shift?
